What can you expect from your appointments?

An initial appointment with a Social Worker involves a conversation about your issues and how they are impacting your life. It’s important for your Social Worker (MSW) to understand the nature of your concern, and much time will be spent learning about what you need. Goals can be established to make sure you get the most out of your time together. This is a collaborative approach between counsellor and client. Every individual has the tools and ability to help themselves, however in difficult times this sometimes becomes harder to see. It’s the responsibility of the Social Worker to empower individuals with their own and learned strengths, and both mental and emotional growth is encouraged throughout the counselling process. Below you will see some of the techniques and therapies used by Kristen during counselling appointments. For more information on Social Workers, please visit the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers website: https://www.ocswssw.org/

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is one of the most empirically researched therapeutic techniques that challenges problematic thought patterns and behaviours.   It is a ‘problem based’ model to which an issue/concern is identified by the client and the counsellor assists in exploring this in further detail, understanding why this is problematic for the client and developing unique strategies to alleviate the unwanted symptoms such as stress, anxiety or depressive thoughts.  For more information on CBT, please visit the following website: https://www.camh.ca/en/health-info/mental-illness-and-addiction-index/cognitive-behavioural-therapy

Dialectal Behavioural Therapy

Dialectical Behavioural Therapy is a type of CBT but it mainly focuses an individual’s emotions to situations and how to better manage intense emotions.  Like CBT, DBT offers practical skills to help an individual through periods of intense stress, depression or anxiety through a variety of skills.  For more information on DBT please visit the following website: https://www.camh.ca/en/health-info/mental-illness-and-addiction-index/dialectical-behaviour-therapy

Narrative Therapy

Is a type of therapeutic practice that separates the person from their problem (goodtherapy.org).  It is a values-based approach to helping a client through a specific problem and is used in a shorter time frame than typical therapeutic practices.  This would be ideal for a person struggling with a specific life circumstance or situation that is hard for them to navigate through based on their own thoughts/feelings.  For more information on Narrative Therapy, please visit the following website: https://www.goodtherapy.org/learn-about-therapy/types/narrative-therapy
