10 Tips for a Healthy Back
80% of Canadians will experience back pain at some point in their lives. Its’s common because it can be caused by so many things, including work-injuries, sports injuries, poor posture, stress, car accidents, improper lifting etc. Any of these issues can lead to pressure on the joints, muscles and nerves which causes the majority of back problems. Like any injury it can recur when the above causes are not addressed.
People will seek help from a chiropractor when any of the symptoms are occurring:
leg pain with numbness, tingling and/or weakness
back or leg pain with coughing or sneezing
difficulty standing up after sitting for any period of time
stiffness in the morning that decreases when you move around
pain in your hip, buttock, thigh, knee or foot
inability to turn or bend to each side equally
unbalanced posture, when your head, neck or shoulder may be higher on one side than the other
pain which prevents you from sleeping well
pain that persists or worsens after 48 hours
A healthy body needs a healthy back. Some people use chiropractic care when back pain strikes. Others use it as a regular tune-up for their body, to help deal with the daily wear & tear of life. The Ontario Chiropractic Association has a chiropractic-approved list of 10 Tips for Keeping your Back Healthy:
Exercise regularly
Follow a healthy diet
Maintain good posture
Stretch your spine before and after sports
Don’t overload your backpack or shoulder bag
Stretch your legs and back after each hour of sitting
Never cradle the phone between your neck and shoulder
Sleep on your back or side, not your stomach
Take time to find a good chair, pillow and mattress for you
See your chiro if you’re having back symptoms, or for regular checkups if that’s best for you
